Tax Investigation Services

Protect yourself from costly Tax Investigations

While no one can predict when HMRC might open an enquiry, having the right protection in place ensures you’re fully supported if they do. Our tax investigations service provides expert representation and financial peace of mind, so you can focus on what matters most - running your business with confidence.

HMRC's strategy to close the tax gap

In the 2023-24 financial year, HMRC generated total tax revenues of £843.4 billion, a figure that has risen steadily each year.

During the Autumn Budget 2024, Labour announced their plans to raise an additional £4.7 billion per year to close the tax gap. Their strategy includes recruiting 5,000 more compliance officers and 1,800 debt management officers. Meanwhile, random enquires and nudge letters remain a key part of HMRC’s approach, with their frequency set to increase as part of efforts to address the £39.8 billion tax gap for 2022-23.

HMRC Investigations

On average, tax enquiries take around 18 months to resolve and you may be selected for a detailed review of your tax affairs - even if you’ve done nothing wrong. Without proper protection, this process could lead to additional professional fees to resolve.

Rickard Luckin partner with Markel Tax, to offer you a market-leading tax investigations service. Whether it’s a cross-tax enquiry, a technical challenge or a detailed books and records review, our tax investigations package is designed to achieve the best possible result for you. As a member of the service, you can be safe in the knowledge that we will represent you in the event of an investigation and deal with HMRC on your behalf. What’s more, you will also have expert legal support when you need it most, with access to our 24/7 Business Legal Helpline and free access to Business Hub, assisting you with everyday legal issues.

What happens during an investigation if you get an enquiry?

If HMRC decide to investigate you must comply with their requests.

HMRC will check your accounts, request a plethora of documentation, ask lots of questions and may even want to visit you in person. No additional tax may be due, but you will still be left with enquiry fees which could cost thousands.

Investigations are costly, stressful, and an unwelcome distraction from day-to-day life; whether HMRC initiate a Full Enquiry of your tax history or an Aspect Enquiry into a specific area of your return, you will be liable for the professional costs to bring about a prompt resolution.
